Als Beispiel dient die USA und die Polizeigewalt an afroamerikanischen Bürgern*innen. Denn in den USA herrscht bereits seit Jahrhunderten eine Rassenproblematik, die mit Abschaffung der Sklaverei nicht sein Ende gefunden hat und somit weiterhin als aktuelles gesellschaftliches Problem gilt. Der heutige Rassismus findet im Gegensatz zur Vergangenheit hinter einem verborgenen Schleier statt, deren Mechanismen das Erkennen von Rassismus erschweren. Nach wie vor stellt Polizeigewalt ein weltweit aktuelles Thema dar, das Probleme mit sich bringt und Zweifel in Bezug auf ein Rechtsstaat aufwirft. Die Folgen sind weitreichend. Neben unzähligen Todesopfern durch Polizeigewalt trägt diese auch zur Reproduktion sozialer Ungleichheit bei. Häufig handelt es sich um bestimmte ethnische Gruppen, die zur Zielscheibe von Polizeigewalt werden. Allein in den USA werden laut Amnesty International pro Jahr schätzungsweise 400 bis 1000 Todesopfer aufgrund von Polizeigewalt verzeichnet. Bei den meisten Opfern handelt es sich um afroamerikanische Bürger*innen. Michael Brown, Eric Garner und Walter Scott sind nur einige von vielen bekannten Opfern, deren Tode auf nationaler Ebene zu Unruhen und Aufständen geführt haben. Ziel dieser Arbeit ist die Veranschaulichung dieser verborgenen Mechanismen zur Reproduktion sozialer Ungleichheit in der amerikanischen Gesellschaft, die insbesondere durch institutionellen Rassismus gestärkt werden. Die daraus entstehenden Folgen für afroamerikanische Bürger*innen und die gesellschaftlichen Auswirkungen sollen ebenfalls skizziert und erläutert werden. Neben der Reproduktion von sozialer Ungleichheit spielt die symbolische Herrschaft ebenfalls eine entscheidende Rolle,
