About the Book

This volume features papers from the second annual Intercultural Horizons conference held in October 2012 in New York City. The conference was the second in an annual series of meetings; the present volume is a companion to one issued in 2012 by Cambridge Scholars Publishing (Intercultural Horizons: Best Practices in Intercultural Competence Development). The papers reflect diverse approaches to intercultural education in the North American setting, with a few also looking at its application in diverse cultural settings in other nations. Our authors provide faculty and student perspectives primarily from the level of postsecondary education, although the volume also includes a look at intercultural education at the primary level. Many papers focus on issues of curriculum, teaching and learning in relation to developing intercultural competence in students in North American colleges and universities, particularly, though not exclusively, through the use of service-learning. The papers also touch on another important development moving from the periphery to the core of many institutions of higher education in North America-the university's engagement with the community. Similar efforts are now emerging among many Asian universities and in Europe. Thus, this volume serves as a preview of themes that the International Center for Intercultural Exchange plans to explore in its future conferences.
About the Author: Lavinia Bracci is founder and director of Siena Italian Studies (SIS) and the International Center for Intercultural Exchange. She is co-author of L'educazione riflessiva interculturale: L'approccio FICCS allo studio della lingua e cultura italiana, a book on the FICCS (Full-Immersion: Culture, Content and Service) instructional approach that she developed with the core team of instructors at SIS for the development of reflective intercultural competence. She has also published articles on language learning and intercultural competence development, as well as an Italian language text called Dimmi Tutto! Nevin C. Brown has worked with several US-based education organizations in the fields of urban and international education as well as urban policy. He has also recently served in leadership roles for the International Partnership for Service-Learning and Leadership. Nevin has published numerous articles in the areas of higher education, global civic engagement and service-learning. As Senior Fellow at the International Center for Intercultural Exchange, he contributes to the development of publications, conferences and related initiatives regarding intercultural exchange and service-learning. Eliza J. Nash is a founding partner of Nove Culturae Ventures LLC, and the Associazione Culturale Ulisse, both of which collaborate with the International Center for Intercultural Exchange to organize study and cultural experiences in Siena, Italy. She is currently Intercultural Development Coordinator at the International Center for Intercultural Exchange, working on the development and implementation of future study programs, conferences and publications. She has most recently co-authored and published an article with Lavinia Bracci regarding intercultural competence development.
