About the Book

There are many ways in which different species of fungi can interact with each other. At one extreme, one living fungus serves directly as the nutrient source for another. This parasitic relationship, often termed “mycoparasitism” is the main focus of this book, particularly with respect to necrotrophic and biotrophic associations. However, fungicolous fungi, which have a constant but indeterminate interfungal association and hence may be parasitic, are also considered. Substantial chapters review physiological and ecological aspects of mycoparasitism while the final chapter examines biological control by fungi of fungal plant pathogens.

Table of Contents:
1: Foreword, D L Hawksworth 2: The variety of interfungal relationships 3: Mycoparasitism defined 4: Occurence of mycoparasitism 5: Origins of mycoparasitism 6: Host-parasite interfaces 7: Fungicolous and lichenicolous associations 8: Fungicolous associations 9: Associations with Myxomycota 10: Associations with Chytridiomycota, Oomycota and the fungi 11: Lichenicolous associations 12: Necrotrophic Associations 13: Contact necrotrophs 14: Characteristics of contact necrotrophs 15: Hyphal interference 16: Involvement of extracellular diffusates in antagonism 17: Invasive necrotrophs 18: Characteristics of invasive necrotrophs 19: Parasitism of vegetative hyphae 20: Parasitism of spores 21: Parasitism of sclerota 22: Biotrophic Associations 23: Haustorial biotrophs 24: Haustorial biotrophs from the Zygomycota 25: Other haustorial biotrophs 26: Fusion biotrophs 27: Intracellular biotrophs 28: Physiological aspects of mycoparasitism 29: Physiology of mycoparasitism 30: Spore germination 31: Axenic growth of mycoparasites 32: Fungicolous relationships 33: Effects of mycoparasitism on the host 34: Necrotropic mycoparasites 35: Ecological aspects of mycoparasitism 36: Isolation of mycoparasitic fungi 37: Natural interfungal relationships 38: Parasitism of spores of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi 39: Destruction of sclerotia 40: Associations with rust and smut fungi 41: Antagonistic fungi associated with mushroom cultivation 42: Mushroom culture 43: Weed moulds 44: Mushroom pathogens 45: Biocontrol of Plant Pathogens 46: Biocontrol of plant diseases 47: Soil-borne diseases 48: General considerations 49: Trichoderma, Gliocladium and Talaromyces 50: Pythium as a biocontrol agent 51: Sclerotial mycoparasites 52: Foliar diseases 53: General considerations 54: Postharvest diseases 55: Commercial considerations 56: Production and formulation 57: Succesfull biocontrol agents 58: Biological protection of wood products 59: Prospects for use in agriculture 60: Appendix: Some fungicolous fungi and their hosts
