About the Author: Eric Leonard Bernstein nació en Montreal en 1910, adonde David y Sarah, sus padres, habían emigrado desde Polonia y Rusia. Al pequeño Eric le gustaba ir en el Ford de su padre y acompañarlo a las visitas médicas que éste realizaba. El Montreal de entonces estaba nítidamente dividido entre anglófilos, francófonos y judíos. En ese ambiente, Eric y su hermana Grace, con nueve y cuatro años, quedan huérfanos tras la muerte de su padre.
En 1935 ya es Doctor en Medicina y posee el Título en Cirugía otorgado por la Universidad McGill, la misma en la que habían estudiado sus padres. En 1936 comienza su formación como psiquiatra residente en Yale, y en 1939 es ciudadano americano. Acorta su nombre a Eric Berne, y tras pasar por el Hospital Mt. Zion de Nueva York, comienza su formación psicoanalítica con Paul Federn, que continuará en San Francisco con Erik Erikson. Entre otras razones, la negativa de Erikson a su boda con Dorothy antes de terminar su formación, la publicación de La mente en acción (obra divulgativa del psicoanálisis), su gran perspicacia, el desarrollo de su pensamiento psicológico basado en la observación de sus pacientes y el rechazo a su admisión en el Instituto Psicoanalítico de San Francisco le impulsan a crear su propio sistema: el Análisis Transaccional.
Este enfoque novedoso irá poco a poco ganando aceptación en círculos profesionales al comprobarse su tremenda eficacia. En 1964 publica Juegos en que participamos. De repente, un libro escrito para profesionales se convierte en un auténtico best-seller. Artículos en la revista Time o apariciones en el show de Johnny Carson catapultan el AT como un método eficaz y potente para mejorar las relaciones de las personas. Sus aplicaciones se expanden más allá del círculo de la psicoterapia, llegando a la educación, el coaching, el cine, etc.
El 15 de julio de 1970 fallece tras dos ataques cardíacos. Estaba repasando las galeradas de su título póstumo, ¿Qué dice Usted después de decir "Hola"?.
