Excerpt: Ivano-Frankivsk (Ukrainian: formerly Stanyslaviv, Stanislau, or Stanis awow see below) is a historic city located in southwestern Ukraine. It is the administrative centre of the Ivano-Frankivsk Oblast (province), and is designated as its own separate raion (district) within the oblast, municipality. The city is the third in population amongst other cities in the Carpathian Euroregion, yielding only to Lviv and Ko ice. Stanis awow was founded as a fortress in 1650 and was named after the Polish hetman Stanis aw "Rewera" Potocki, although other sources claim it is named after his grandson (see History of Ivano-Frankivsk).
