Il a été constaté ces dernières années, tant en Haïti que sur la scène internationale, un regain d'intérêt pour la personne ainsi que l'oeuvre de Jacques Stephen Alexis, figure emblématique de la littérature d'Haïti et de la Caraïbe. Tout à la fois, médecin, journaliste, romancier, essayiste et homme politique, ce natif des Gonaïves qui a débuté dans la littérature par un essai très remarqué sur le poète haïtien Hamilton Garoute a laissé une oeuvre inachevée composée d'articles, d'essais, de contes (Romancero aux étoiles) et de romans qui n'ont cessé d'être l'objet de traductions et d'études sous formes de mémoires, de thèses de doctorat, d'essais et d'articles. En juin 2018, L'espace d'un cillement (1959) a été le premier lauréat du prix Jean d'Ormesson. En 2016, l'éditrice Laure Leroy des éditions Zulma a retrouvé la suite inachevée de ce roman qui sera publiée sous le titre L'Étoile Absinthe. Le premier roman de Jacques Stephen Alexis, Compère général soleil (1955), a été traduit en anglais par Carrol F. Coates en 1999 et en créole par Édenne Roc en 2018. L'intérêt pour l'oeuvre d'Alexis se manifeste aussi par sa réception interne dans la littérature haïtienne comme c'est le cas chez Lyonel Trouillot qui a publié, en 2011, son roman intitulé La belle amour humaine en écho au texte du même titre publié par Jacques Stephen Alexis en janvier 1957. Lui rendant hommage pour le prix Jean d'Ormesson, Dany Laferrière reconnaît que l'auteur de L'espace d'un cillement n'a jamais cessé de cheminer en lui.

D'aucuns diront qu'Alexis, pour reprendre une expression chère à Eddy Arnold Jean se référant à Coriolan Ardouin, est passé comme une comète dans l'histoire de la littérature haïtienne, et rien ne prédit si la postérité sera capable de lui rendre ce qu'elle lui doit tant son génie, sa science et son engagement n'ont d'égal que dans cet amour voué à l'homme, son semblable, à ce rêve, cet idéal parcourant son oeuvre de part en part... Ce véritable météore, quelquefois oublié comme tant d'autres de la critique, a droit à la reconnaissance de la postérité pour avoir laissé une oeuvre gigantesque, source inépuisable pour la naissance d'une nouvelle humanité.
