About the Book

Hollywood's leading biographers explore the behind-the-scenes saga of the most talented father-daughter act in the history of cinema. It turns a spotlight on two emotionally intertwined Oscar winners, the lanky and boyish American hero, Henry Fonda; and his beautiful daughter Jane, a political activist and superstar beloved by millions despite her formerly poisonous reputation as "Hanoi Jane." Their lives were filled with glamour, heartbreak, fame, and loves gone astray. In reference to their perplexing cradle-to-grave links, Henry's best friend, James Stewart, claimed, "Greatness begat greatness." Throughout his forty-five year career, Henry--a stable, reassuring archetype of the American male-- never gave a bad performance, immortalizing himself in such films as Young Mr. Lincoln, The Grapes of Wrath, and Mr. Roberts. The torments of his introverted private life vied with his on-screen dilemmas. Personal dramas included five wives (two of whom committed suicide) and affairs which starred such mega-divas as Lucille Ball, Joan Crawford, and Bette Davis. As a precocious but love-starved child raised amid the bizarre abnormalities of Hollywood, "Rebel Jane" admitted, "I did naughty things to attract his attention." On screen, she transformed herself from a Barbarella sexpot in an experimental fringe film directed by the most scandalous director in France (Roger Vadim, her husband at the time) to a superstar in such big-budget movies as Cat Ballou (in which she played a naïve cowgirl); Klute (a prostitute); and Coming Home (an unhappily married military wife in love with a disabled vet). When she moved from the edgy fringes of the New Wave to "major studio superstardom" as a dramatic actress, her real-life dramas rivaled anything she crafted for the screen. A "self-transformative genius," she morphed herself from a chain-smoking pill-popper into America's leading fitness guru, becoming a millionairess, an "über-feminist," a business mogul, and one of her era's most visible and effective political activists. This page-turner explores the conflicts between an aloof father and his over-compensating (some say "superhuman") daughter. Within a relationship otherwise peppered with bitterness, alienation, and long separations, this historic father/daughter team concluded with a triumph of reconciliation and mutual respect, confronting his final curtain together in On Golden Pond. This book, unlike any other previously published, reflects the private agonies of a father and daughter engulfed by the divisions of their respective generations and the ironies of The American Experience.
About the Author: Social archivists and film historians Darwin Porter and Danforth Prince are the co-authors of dozens of biographies, many of them award-winning, of men and women who changed the presuppositions of their eras and (usually) enriched the American Experience.
