C'est alors que je me suis focalise sur ce genre de choses, comme les cibles par exemple, des choses familieres. Cela m'a permis de concentrer ma reflexion sur d'autres niveaux. Par exemple, j'ai toujours pense une peinture comme etant une surface, la peindre en une seule couleur rendait cela evident. Puis, j'ai decide que regarder une peinture ne devait pas necessiter une concentration speciale comme, par exemple, assister a une messe. On devrait pouvoir regarder une peinture comme on regarde un radiateur. " Contrairement a la plupart des declarations des artistes des annees 1950, on ne retrouvait pas dans le discours de Johns les doutes et l'angoisse habituels, et sa selection de themes avait l'air delibere, sans desirs, ni liens affectifs. Cependant, aux yeux des artistes plus jeunes, apres les exces de l'expressionnisme abstrait, son art etait plus honnete, plus lucide que froid et denue de sentiments. En choisissant des sujets facilement reconnaissables, Johns semblait rejeter la peinture abstraite. Cependant, les sujets eux-memes possedaient une caracteristique vitale de l'abstraction classique, leur planeite, les rendant indiscernables de la surface de la toile. Ce livre souligne comment le travail de Jasper Johns rendit obsolete la polarite entre l'abstraction et la representation qui domina les debats de l'art moderne pendant des dizaines d'annees, et comment son xuvre ouvrit de nouvelles perspectives sur les relations de l'art et du monde.
