La Trinidad, la doctrina que afirma la triple personalidad de Dios, es exclusivamente una doctrina cristiana y una verdad de la Escritura. Pero a pesar de los valiosos esfuerzos de estos eruditos, la Trinidad es todavía largamente incomprensible a la mente humana. Y no podría ser de otra forma: ¡Se trata de explicar la naturaleza misma de Dios! ¡El ser más grandioso, fascinante y complejo del universo!

Tal vez la principal razón por la que muchos rechazan la doctrina de la Trinidad reside en el hecho de que ella está más allá de la lógica y no puede sujetarse a la razón humana. Debido a esto, los oponentes de la doctrina argumentan que la doctrina de la Trinidad debe ser rechazada como insostenible.

Tal manera de pensar, sin embargo, hace a la corrupta razón del hombre el único criterio para determinar la verdad de la revelación divina. Pero nuestra pobre y limitada razón jamás podrá alcanzar a descubrir o comprender en su totalidad lo divino. En Isaías, Dios habla acerca de esto y dice: "Porque mis pensamientos no son vuestros pensamientos, ni vuestros caminos mis caminos, dijo Jehová. Como son más altos los cielos que la tierra, así son mis caminos más altos que vuestros caminos, y mis pensamientos más que vuestros pensamientos." (Isaías 55:8-9).

Desafortunadamente, no todos están dispuestos a aceptar aquello que su mente finita es incapaz de procesar y comprender en su totalidad. Este es el caso con grupos como el movimiento pentecostal unicitario o "Jesús Sólo", el cual rechaza la doctrina de la Trinidad por no encajar en su lógica, razonamientos, interpretaciones particulares o incluso las visiones de sus líderes.

El cristianismo evangélico ha creído en la Trinidad, o Triunidad Divina, no por mera lealtad a tradiciones humanas o a concilios eclesiásticos de antaño, sino a causa de la enseñanza de la Biblia como un todo (Antiguo y Nuevo Testamento). La fe trinitaria ortodoxa no depende de uno o dos pasajes particulares como sucede con las sectas. Como se mostrará a través de las páginas de este libro, la totalidad de las Escrituras dan testimonio de esta doctrina.

En el proceso de explicar la doctrina bíblica de la Trinidad refutaremos también las herejías propagadas por el movimiento "Jesús Sólo" o pentecostalismo unicitario. Dicho movimiento religioso antitrinitario se desarrolló en el transcurso del siglo XX en los márgenes del movimiento pentecostal clásico. Como movimiento, ha existido en varias formas y organizaciones denominacionales, y su más amplia manifestación actual es la Iglesia Pentecostal Unida Internacional.

El pentecostalismo unicitario, como una forma de modalismo, es una negación ultraconservadora de la Trinidad. Los evangélicos, instantáneamente, reconocemos el error liberal, el subordinacionismo, como herético, y lo consideramos una idea sub-cristiana de Dios, la cual no puede ser suficiente para la salvación. Diríamos que, ya que los subordinacionistas (los arrianos, los socinianos o los Testigos de Jehová, por ejemplo) no adoran al Dios correcto, no son salvos. Pero encontramos aún más difícil decir esto acerca de los modalistas, especialmente aquellos como los pentecostales unicitarios quienes oran, cantan y se comportan de forma tan parecida a los evangélicos tradicionales o al resto de pentecostales trinitarios.

Una razón para nuestra dificultad puede ser que estemos tan comprometidos con la deidad de Cristo que, mientras podemos ver fácilmente cómo esta doctrina puede ser subestimada, es difícil para nosotros imaginar cómo sería posible enfatizarla demasiado. No obstante sobreestimar o malentender la deidad de Cristo es exactamente lo que los pentecostales unicitarios han hecho. Sin duda, el estudio de este libro puede resultar beneficioso para aquellos que han caído en dicho error o deseen ayudar a un amigo modalista a volver al camino correcto.
