About the Book

English summary: The cellist, composer, and music scholar Joachim Stutschewsky (born in what is now the Ukraine, 1891-1982) was the most important theorist and broker of the "New Jewish School." Within his numerous writings one finds an important source-text of the "Klezmerforschung," or his study of the music of the Ashkenazi Jews (Klezmer/Klezmorin). This study is presented for the first time in the German original version, which until now was only available in a Hebrew translation. Stutschewsky described the history and the theory of Klezmer music from its origins in Central and Eastern Europe up to its recent past in Israel. The description of local customs and musical families is important in its own right but also represents an important historical document as well. This present edition by Joachim M. Klein is based on the original manuscript of Stutschewsky's from the 1950s, which is preserved as part of his archived materials in Tel Aviv. Together with an introduction and notes by the editor, this edition also offers a critical reading list, which establishes the basis for further scholarly engagement.
