About the Book

Keats belonged to the Western hemisphere and Ghalib to the Eastern. Now the poet of the West is a part of the syllabus in the East and the Eastern one is a part of the syllabus in the West. They led a poor life, drank to the dregs all dismays and delights, hopes and fears that life could afford; dreamed their dreams, wove webs of facts and fancy and left 'a sheaf of gold' in the hands of mankind before flying high into the Olympian regions.

God does not want that his chosen ones should be nursed and nourished as the mortal millions are. Our poets were orphaned at an early age. Relatives from the side of the mother looked after them. They were granted legacies and pensions and the papers in both the cases were washed in tears-just to multiply their miseries. The bread of sorrow was soaked in their own blood. It is never 'unalloyed happiness' for John Keats and Mirza Ghalib always counts ‘dagh-e-hasrat-e-dil’-the unfulfilled desires. They were allotted a fairly satisfactory sum of Misfortune to bring out the best in them. "Do you not see how necessary a World of Pains and a trouble is to school an intelligence and make it a soul?" And the poet of the East wrote that 'the onslaughts of misfortune are in no way less than the slaps of teachers on the cheeks of the school-children'. The World of Pains and troubles and the slaps of misfortune taught them to compose verses of exquisite brilliance to thrill, delight, enlighten and strengthen generation after generation.
