Wann und wie entstand diese Institution? Wenn, wie Hans Weigel sagte, "der Kaffee im Café nicht Zweck, sondern Mittel" ist, warum geht man dann ins Kaffeehaus? Was fasziniert die Menschen so daran? Was haben sie in den Kaffeehäusern Wiens getrieben? Was ist eigentlich die Kaffeehausliteratur? Und wie sieht die Situation heute aus, ist ein solcher Trend auch in unserer jetzigen Gesellschaft zu beobachten? Ich stieß auf Starbucks und fragte mich, was es ist, das Starbucks hat und andere unabhängige Cafés nicht. Was macht es so einzigartig? Mit welchen Mitteln werden bestimmte Zielgruppen angesprochen und warum kann ich mich in vielen Städten, die ich in Nord- und Südamerika bereiste, nur zu gut an die Starbucks Stores erinnern? Sind die Menschen, die heute in einem Starbucks arbeiten, vergleichbar mit denen, welche früher in den Kaffeehäusern Wiens Briefe und Feuilletons schrieben? Ist das Starbucks gar das Kaffeehaus der heutigen Gesellschaft? Diesen Fragen gehe ich in meiner Arbeit nach. Ich untersuche und vergleiche das Wiener Kaffeehaus und das Coffee House Starbucks - von ihrem Ursprung und der Geschichte über die Produktangebote bis hin zu Gewohnheiten und Arbeitsweisen der Gäste. Einleitend wird über Kaffee im allgemeinen, über dessen Herkunft, den Weg von der Kaffeekirsche bis hin zum Getränk, die Legenden und Geschichten berichtet und kurz das Thema der Verarbeitung angeschnitten. Einen generellen Überblick über die Geschichte der Cafés und die Kundschaft bilden den Übergang in die nächsten Kapitel. Die Rolle der Frau in der Geschichte der Kaffeehauskultur wird vollkommen außer Acht gelassen, da sie für meine Untersuchung nicht relevant ist.
