About the Book

English summary: The work of Karl Schmidt-Rottluff (1884-1976) is presented in this monograph in all its breadth. His prominent position within the history of expressionism is revealed here both in light of pictural examples - mostly from the collection of the Bruecke-Museum in Berlin - and comprehensive, accompanying texts. Schmidt-Rottluff is one of the great German Expressionists. As co-founder of the artist group "Bruecke" in Dresden in 1905, he contributed to the writing of art history. He abandoned his architectural studies to work as a freelance artist and, together with his "Bruecke" colleagues Kirchner, Heckel, Nolde and Pechstein, developed a mode of expression that radically broke with all previously established rules. Unmixed and diverse colors and an ever more simplified form of language are indicative of Schmidt-Rottluff's expressionism. After initially being strongly influenced by the paintings of van Gogh, in 1909/10 it was African art that inspired Schmidt-Rottluff and led to an energetic imagery. After 1918, he culminated his expressive style in large format paintings. In the 1930s he found a new realistic form. In the years of internal exile, works with muted tones and cryptic content dominated. After 1945, after defamation and being forbidden to paint, the now 60-year-old artist dared to start fresh. Large shapes and bright colors often determined his late style. German text. German description: ganzen Breite vorgestellt.
