Abstract: Caroline Wong MA in Applied Linguistics Keeping an 'I' out: A Discourse Analysis of Bridget Jones's Diary Abstract Selling six million copies, translated into 25 languages and published in 33 countries spawning two movies and two sequels (10meters.com, para. 4), Bridget Jones's Diary has been a phenomenal publishing success. Marking a divergence from traditional romances which pit a beautiful, courageous young heroine in the arms of an initially, cold and distant handsome hero, Fielding offered a heroine who was flawed in the traditional sense, being neither stunningly beautiful, nor young, but winning hearts because of her very imperfections. The content and style of this book was to ignite the beginnings of a new generation of writing that appealed directly to young women. Called 'chick-lit' these novels broke from the rigidity of traditional romance formulas, removing the more fairy-tale element. Heroines were cast in the ordinary environments of the workplace and life in the city, and the novels focused on work, female relationships, and the ups and downs of their relationship with men. Bridget Jones's Diary has been chosen for analysis because it is a novel written by a woman almost exclusively for a female audience and because the impact on its readership, and indeed the publishing world in terms of women's writing, has been enormous. This is the book that has inspired two sequels, two major films and given words like "fuckwittage" and "singleton" a place in the English language. Taking ideas from critics who have written on gender and discourse such as Robin Lakoff, Judith Butler and Mary Crawford, the language of the novel is examined to analyse 1how concepts of gender interplay through the discourse of the novel. The characters pick and choose their language depending on how they wish to express themselves and the image of femininity that they wish to articulate, but they are bound by societal expectations. This dissertation shows the restrictions to the characters' expression of the self in the novel and also the methods which the characters deploy in order to get around these boundaries. st Submitted 31 August, 2006 2 DOI: 10.5353/th_b3672304
