Die steigende Verantwortung, die den Tochtergesellschaften dadurch zukam, ließ sie letztendlich in Größe und Einfluss wachsen, sodass die ursprüngliche Rolle der Tochtergesellschaft innerhalb des gesamtorganisationalen Netzwerks überdacht werden muss. Längst können Tochtergesellschaften auf die Entwicklung eigener Technologien zurückschauen und bedienen somit nicht mehr die traditionellen Funktionen, die sie einst von der Konzernzentrale zugewiesen bekamen. Beziehungen zwischen der Konzernzentrale und den Tochtergesellschaften einer MNU wurden in der International Business (IB) Literatur bereits ausführlich diskutiert, und meist auf Basis der Agenturtheorie charakterisiert. Beziehungen zwischen Tochtergesellschaften einer MNU hingegen wurden in der IB Literatur nur spärlich untersucht. Nicht umsonst unterstreichen Schmid und Maurer den Titel ihres Aufsatzes mit den Worten "[...] Opening a BlackBox In The International Business Field". (Schmid u. Maurer,2011) Hier soll das Thema dieser Arbeit ansetzen. Auf intraorganisationaler Ebene werden die relationalen Beziehungen zwischen Tochtergesellschaften untersucht. Diese Beziehungen umfassen sowohl kooperative als auch kompetitive Interaktionen zwischen den organisationalen Einheiten.
