Royaume, " l'ardent royaume," c'est le corps de Monna, sa beaute insolente et douce, mais c'est aussi l'enchainement des plaisirs, des joies et des folies qu'y decouvre Me Mange et qui vont le perdre. Car Royaume est a la fois l'histoire d'une joie immense et d'une decheance banale: un homme de cinquante ans, " arrive," bien marie, bon pere, notable de sa ville, sent un jour, comme disait Barres, " le vide de son coeur et de ses mains ." Il fait - et peu lui importent les moyens - la connaissance de Monna, qui a vingt-cinq ans et un passe tumultueux. Alors il comprend que, dans sa vie, tout ce qui etait tiedeur peut devenir feu et flammes; tout ce qui etait penombre et gene peut eclater au grand soleil, etre jete a la face du monde. Du moins le croit-il... Au fur et a mesure que Me Mange, " le grand avocat," va se risquer plus avant vers le plaisir, va provoquer davantage l'etonnement, puis la colere de la societe qui l'avait reconnu pour un de ses elus, il va aussi detruire autour de lui tout ce qui avait ete force et paix: son foyer, ses liens avec ses enfants, sa reussite professionnelle. Aux premieres pages il est un Pharisien triomphant, un homme s-r de son fait et de son droit, - a la fin du recit il n'est plus qu'une epave, ce professeur de " l'Ange bleu " qui criait " cocorico " sur les planches d'un beuglant... Le passe douteux d'une jeune femme trop belle et trop pauvre, un peu de drogue, un peu de curiosite policiere et - surtout - beaucoup d'impardonnable bonheur, et le puissant Me Mange va s'abimer dans la solitude. Deja " La confession du Pasteur Burg," que Jacques Chessex publia en 1967, etait l'histoire d'une decouverte du plaisir et d'une decheance. Dans " L'Ogre " aussi, Prix Goncourt 1973, on voyait un homme de Suisse romande ecrase par le poids d'une societe ou les peres - comme les " policiers " et les " gens bien " de Royaume - agissent en ogres et vous devorent le coeur. Forme par une morale et un pays calvinistes, Chessex oscille toujours entre Bien et Mal, societe et revolte, famille et solitude, froideur des corps et fournaise charnelle. Monde en blanc et noir, tout en violences, aux passions longtemps contenues puis soudain forcenees et destructrices. Dans une oeuvre dont nous pouvons desormais voir se dessiner les themes et les directions, Royaume apporte un ton nouveau: la violence et la joie sensuelles. La description d'une ville - Lausanne - et de sa bonne societe, le portrait de Me Mange, le realisme: tout est admirablement en place dans ce roman; mais la vraie lumiere, la vraie singularite lui sont donnees par l'impudeur et le lyrisme sensuels. Paysages d'un corps et d'un pays, comprehension d'un pays a travers le naturel et le vertige d'un corps, chant de joie amoureuse qui se terminera dans le silence multiple de l'echec: Royaume est un beau recit charnel et desespere, tendre et sarcastique, qui confirme la place de Jacques Chessex, apres son triomphe de 1973, dans les lettres de langue francaise contemporaines.
