Léon Bloy, né le 11 juillet 1846 à Notre-Dame-de-Sanilhac et mort le 3 novembre 1917 à Bourg-la-Reine, est un romancier et essayiste français. Connu pour son roman Le Désespéré, largement inspiré de sa relation avec Anne-Marie Roulé, il est aussi un polémiste célèbre. Biographie Né à Notre-Dame-de-Sanilhac, il est le deuxième des sept garçons de Jean-Baptiste Bloy, fonctionnaire aux Ponts et Chaussées et franc-maçon, et d'Anne-Marie Carreau, une ardente catholique. Ses études au lycée de Périgueux sont médiocres: retiré de l'établissement en classe de quatrième, il continue sa formation sous la direction de son père, qui l'oriente vers l'architecture. Bloy commence à rédiger un journal intime, s'essaie à la littérature en composant une tragédie, Lucrèce, et s'éloigne de la religion. En 1864, son père lui trouve un emploi à Paris, il entre comme commis au bureau de l'architecte principal de la Compagnie ferroviaire d'Orléans. Médiocre employé, Bloy rêve de devenir peintre et s'inscrit à l'École des beaux-arts. Il écrit ses premiers articles, sans toutefois parvenir à les faire publier, et fréquente les milieux du socialisme révolutionnaire et de l'anticléricalisme. Résumé Celui que Léon Bloy a choisi comme héros pour son roman Le Désespéré est un jeune écrivain accablé par l'infortune. Marchenoir ainsi qu'il se prénomme, possède une plume redoutable que tous les journalistes de ce Paris fin de siècle (19e) craignent. Bravant les codes de la littérature à la mode de l'époque, cet insoumis ne jure que par la vérité mais à quel prix ? Quitte à braver la médiocrité des grands de ce monde, Marchenoir terrorise ses adversaires par sa plume virulente. On le méprise pour sa pauvreté mais on le craint pour son esprit. Marchenoir veut écrire l'oeuvre de sa vie. Mais la pauvreté, cette tare que même la religion n'a pas réussi à rendre respectable, est sa plus grande calamité ("Indiscutablement, la Pauvreté est le plus énorme des crimes, et le seul qu'aucune circonstance ne saurait atténuer aux yeux d'un juge équitable. (...) Aussi, le genre humain ne s'y est jamais trompé, et l'infaillible instinct de tous les peuples, en n'importe quel lieu de la terre, a toujours frappé d'une identiqueréprobation les titulaires de la guenille et du ventre creux."p. 420) Contraint de mendier auprès de ces gens qu'il abhorre, Marchenoir s'abandonne à un amour impossible pour la belle Véronique. Cette femme autrefois dite La Ventouse, était une prostituée dont les armes ont anéantis plus d'une volonté. De leur rencontre par une nuit glaciale, naît une relation insensée qui transforme la belle en une dévote religieuse des plus fanatiques. Refusant tout d'abord cette idylle impossible, Marchenoir stimule à son insu chez la jeune femme, une dévotion et un sens du sacrifice frisant la folie...
