Se proclamer " Mecontent," c'etait pour les nobles, pendant le siecle trouble qui separe les regnes de Henri II et de Louis XIV, se prevaloir d'un statut quasi officiel d'opposant a la politique royale. En l'absence d'institutions vraiment efficaces permettant de s'exprimer legalement, le recours a la violence apparaissait comme un moyen normal de faire entendre sa voix: les Mecontents qui avaient a se plaindre du roi ou de ses conseillers " prenaient les armes " pour faire pression sur lui et alerter l'opinion. Ces revoltes ambigues ont rassemble des hommes issus de categories sociales variees, mais leurs chefs ont ete des gentilshommes, parmi lesquels on comptait les plus grands noms de la noblesse. Ceux-ci poursuivaient un but commun, par-dela la diversite de leurs convictions religieuses: il s'agissait pour eux de promouvoir une plus grande participation des sujets _ dont ils s'estimaient les porte-parole naturels _ au gouvernement. Leurs prises d'armes ont ete un effort desordonne et souvent desespere devant l'evolution " absolutiste " de la monarchie, pour faire triompher une autre conception, tout aussi coherente, du pouvoir et des hierarchies sociales: pour eux, se revolter etait un devoir. La connaissance de ces revoltes, de leurs animateurs, l'examen attentif des ecrits _ theoriques ou de circonstance _ publies a leur occasion, est indispensable pour bien saisir la portee de l'evolution politique de l'age classique auquel on est condamne a ne rien comprendre si on ne la situe pas dans la perspective des combats qui l'ont precede. Apres la Fronde se degagera lentement une theorie politique plus ouverte sur la recherche de moyens institutionnels susceptibles d'incarner durablement l'ideal politique de la noblesse, ou du moins de la partie la plus riche et la plus eclairee d'entre elle. Au carrefour de l'histoire politique, de l'histoire sociale et de l'histoire des idees, cette demarche apporte une contribution decisive a l'etude des relations entre pouvoir et societe dans la France d'Ancien Regime. Professeur a l'universite Paul-Valery de Montpellier, Arlette Jouanna est specialiste du XVIe siecle en general, et de la noblesse de cette periode en particulier. Elle a publie en 1977 Ordre social. Mythes et hierarchies dans la France du XVIe siecle.
