Venant apres sept edits de pacification, tous ephemeres, l'Edit de Nantes suscita peu d'etonnement lors de sa promulgation, comme si rien ne pouvait etre acquis dans le domaine de la tolerance. Dans une France ou " ceux de la Religion " etaient soumis a mille vexations dans l'exercice du culte et dans leur vie quotidienne, qui aurait pu imaginer que cette paix serait " perdurable " et qu'elle serait, ainsi que le proclamait le texte de l'edit, " le principal fondement du retablissement de l'Etat en sa premiere grandeur "? C'est la gestation de cette paix, depuis longtemps revendiquee par une minorite, que relate ce livre. On y voit comment dans un pays dechire par des troubles autant civils que religieux, Henri IV et une poignee de ses sujets ont su apaiser les passions et gagner les Francais a l'idee de tolerance. Faire coexister deux religions dans un royaume: l'idee etait encore nouvelle en Europe et, pour la realiser, il faudra toute l'intelligence politique du roi mais aussi la pression des assemblees protestantes. Apres des mois de discussions au cours desquelles les deputes huguenots et les conseillers royaux font l'apprentissage de l'art de la negociation, le traite est enfin signe. C'est en fait un compromis entre les exigences des uns et des autres, puisque les reformes obtiennent la liberte de conscience et l'egalite des droits mais non l'entiere liberte de culte. Au bout du compte, l'Edit de Nantes restitue a l'Eglise romaine sa suprematie tout en assurant aux protestants une place dans le renouveau de la civilisation francaise. Janine Garrisson, professeur emerite des universites, est l'auteur de nombreux livres sur l'histoire politique et religieuse du XVIe siecle. On lui doit en particulier Les Protestants au XVIe siecle (Fayard, 1988 et 1997) et Marguerite de Valois (Fayard, 1994). Elle a egalement presente une edition annotee de l'Edit de Nantes (Atlantica, 1997).
