About the Book

The Enlightenment is often regarded as the founding moment of modern archaeology. Via a connected history of antiquarian knowledge, this book provides a fresh approach to eighteenth-century antiquarianism. In recent decades, the history of archaeology has attempted to shift the focus from national antiquities to a global perspective. First, by favouring a comparative perspective on the distant rather than the near, collective works have thus shown the relations that different human societies have maintained, throughout history, with the remains of the past. Second, instead of texts and philological traditions, the recent historiography of antiquarian cultures and antiquarianism has re-evaluated the importance of objects of material culture that had been little considered in a numismatic approach or that had long focused on coins, medals, and monuments. In this book, the comparison does not serve to reinforce the idea of an anthropological invariant- that antiquarianism exists in all societies- but underlines the importance of political and imperial contexts in the making of antiquities. Far from being neutral, this collection work carried out in the eighteenth-century is deeply linked to political issues. The book proposes to examine the globalization and politicization of antiquities, at a time when their collection and material study took place in European metropolises but also in other political centres (Philadelphia, Peking, Agra, Delhi, Copenhagen).
