Les Rêveries du promeneur solitaire est un ouvrage inachevé de Jean-Jacques Rousseau rédigé entre 1776 et 1778, en France, à Paris puis chez René-Louis de Girardin au château d'Ermenonville. Ce livre annonce, à la manière des Nuits d'Edward Young (1742-1745) ou des Souffrances du jeune Werther de Goethe (1774-1787), la naissance du romantisme européen. Historique Le Voyageur contemplant une mer de nuages de Caspar David Friedrich (1818). Les Rêveries du promeneur solitaire est une publication posthume de l'écrivain et philosophe genevois Jean-Jacques Rousseau. Il constitue le dernier de ses écrits, la partie finale ayant vraisemblablement été conçue quelques semaines avant sa mort, et l'oeuvre étant inachevée. Sa rédaction s'est établie tout au long des deux dernières années de sa vie, jusqu'à son refuge au château d'Ermenonville: la nature solitaire et paranoïaque de l'auteur malgré une notoriété croissante l'a contraint à cet exil après l'accueil de ses Dialogues, et peut-être également la mort de Louis François de Bourbon (dit le Prince de Conti) durant l'été 1776. Présentation générale Les Rêveries du promeneur solitaire tiennent à la fois de l'autobiographie et de la réflexion philosophique: elles constituent un ensemble d'une centaine de pages, l'auteur employant très généralement la première personne du singulier et apportant par digressions quelques détails sur sa vie. Le livre, qui se présente comme un informe journal [des] rêveries de Rousseau, est composé de dix sections inégales, appelées promenades, qui sont des réflexions sur la nature de l'Homme et son Esprit. Rousseau, à travers cet ouvrage, présente une vision philosophique du bonheur, proche de la contemplation, de l'état ataraxique, à travers un isolement relatif, une vie paisible, et surtout, une relation fusionnelle avec la nature, développée par la marche, la contemplation, l'herborisation que Rousseau pratique.
