Anastasio Somoza Debayle, el dictador; Anastasio Somoza Portocarrero, el hijo; y Dinorah Sampson, la amante, se encontraban en altamar, en su lujoso yate rumbo a Las Bahamas debido a que el subsecretario de Estado, Warren Christopher anuló la invitación para que el derrocado presidente fijara su residencia en Estados Unidos.El capitán Justiniano Pérez, el guardia, estaba esa mañana en el aeropuerto Las Mercedes (hoy Augusto C. Sandino), en medio de una multitud histérica --guardias y somocistas-- esperando un vuelo que nunca llegaría desde El Salvador a rescatarlos. Para el comienzo de la tarde, cuando se comenzaron a oír balaceras por las cercanías, huyó, huyeron, del lugar a buscar refugio donde se pudiera. El aeropuerto quedó desierto. Poblado sólo por las armas y uniformes que los militares abandonaron en su precipitada transformación a "civiles." Mientras tanto, Domingo Sánchez, Chagüitillo, el sindicalista, esperaba en su casa de la Colonia Nicarao el rumbo que tomarían las cosas.
