Esta antigua sociedad, descendiente de la antigua cultura de la albañilería, se cree que conoce las más profundas, oscuras e inexplicables verdades del universo. Como saben muchos, los masones han existido por siglos. El Renacimiento, que llegó a su máximo esplendor entre los siglos 14 y 16, vio un estallido de creatividad y de progreso en una variedad de formas de arte a través de Europa. El gremio de los albañiles experimentó cambios; los aprendices no se veían ya restringidos por el comercio. Una gran porción de esos aprendices eran artistas y librepensadores, pero seguían prometiendo adherencia a la tradicional cultura albañil. Como la mayoría de las leyendas, todavía se discuten hoy en día los orígenes de la Masonería. La más antigua mención de la sociedad se remonta al Manuscrito Hallwell, o Poema Regio que supuestamente fue escrito entre finales del siglo 14 y principios del 15. El manuscrito, en exquisita caligrafía y en inglés antiguo, tenía 64 páginas y 794 versos. Es considerado el primero de los tradicionales manuscritos masónicos y es generalmente aceptado como la "verdadera" historia de los comienzos de la fraternidad. El poema empieza con Euclides, matemático griego del siglo 4° A.C., recordado hoy en día como "el padre de la geometría." Se dice que el genio matemático incorporó la geometría a un nuevo campo que él denominó "albañilería." Con esta nueva y refinada rama científica, viajó a Egipto y transmitió sus conocimientos a los hijos de los nobles egipcios.
