About the Book

"Luckier Than Most" is the true story of a boy named Harry.

As one of the last surviving verterans of WWII, Harry is part of a generation born in the decade following World War I, spent their childhood in great poverty and then, while still in their teens, were sent off to distant lands to fight in the next world war.

Raised during the Great Depression, Harry and his family struggled to find a better life, desperately in search of the American Dream and a place to call home.

Uprooted 19 times by the age of 16, Harry learned early how to cope with the harsh realities of a chaotic life. His childhood was spent on freight trains and hitchhiking back and forth across country, being sent out to beg for food to feed his family, working the fields of California and living out in the open under an old oak tree.

His determination to distance himself from an unhappy childhood led Harry to a life in the United States Army and into two war zones (World War II and the Korean Conflict).

Harry's decades-long career in bomb disposal and the U.S. Army Infantry exposed him to more danger than one can imagine. But when it mattered most, good training, luck and God always seemed to be on his side.

Having survived an unimaginable childhood, two wars and a dangerous career, Harry was determined to find happiness and by golly, he did!

It's not always a happy story. In fact, there's an awful lot of heartache between the pages. But even during the bad times, Harry's eternal optimism shines through as does his steadfast belief that life is what you make it.

Reading Harry's story - which in many ways is his generation's story - you'll realize why Tom Brokaw called this "The Greatest Generation."
About the Author: Harry D. White was born in Big Spring, Texas on March 5, 1925. He spent his childhood on freight trains and hitchhiking back and forth across the country with his family, searching for the American Dream.

Uprooted 19 times by the age of 16, Harry learned early how to cope with the harsh realities of a chaotic life.

His determination to distance himself from an unhappy childhood led him to a life in the United States Army and into two war zones (World War II and the Korean Conflict).

His decades-long career in bomb disposal and the U.S. Army Infantry exposed him to more danger than one can imagine.

Harry and his wife Barbara have raised four children and are now enjoying retirement in Texarkana, Texas with their dog Valor.

Since retiring, Harry has made sure that others are able to enjoy the companionship of their dog as much as he has. That's why he's spent the past 19 years serving as a TDI (Therapy Dogs International) Evaluator as well as offering dog training classes.

They say everyone has a book inside them. Harry certainly does. At the urging of his children, he decided to put his story down on paper. The result is this book.
