Todos, o casi todos, conocemos el drama que acontece en Sudáfrica desde hace décadas con las especies protegidas y el feroz tráfico y aniquilación de especies protegidas que se ejerce sobre ellas. UN LUGAR DONDE NUNCA MUEREN LOS SUEÑOS, no es sólo una aventura basada, hasta cierto punto en hechos reales. Es, además, una palmaria denuncia contra el expolio y exterminio de las especies protegidas. Es, asimismo, una novela repleta de matices personales, emocionalmente sincrónicos, escritos en clave de Diario personal, que arranca en mi imaginación en los años 80.

En ella, titulada tras diversas ideas, UN LUGAR DONDE NUNCA MUEREN LOS SUEÑOS, Lázaro Clermont, un policía del ESPU [Endangered Species Protection Unit], destinado en Sudáfrica aunque de vuelta a Barcelona, pretende dar caza al mayor traficante de especies, Jeremías Pan, alias Caracortada.

Este esotérico sujeto, Pan, es un extraño, despiadado y todopoderoso traficante de animales, que posee, a su vez, una particular y personal e inaplazable deuda de sangre con Ulises, un magnífico ejemplar de mandril, fugado del Centro de Pruebas Experimentales, posesión de la multinacional farmacéutica IPCICCEX. Durante meses, más de un año, Ulises ha estado sometido de forma incesante a insólitos experimentos, con el único propósito de ser catapultado al espacio en el proyecto que la tenebrosa Organización IPCICCEX [Instituto de Proyectos para la Cibernética Cósmica y Comportamiento Experimental] lleva a cabo.

Ulises, al corriente de los propósitos que pretenden los humanos, provoca una escapatoria. Con dicha evasión, y posterior insurrección entre el resto de animales en el Centro de Pruebas Experimentales, que, como él, se aciertan cautivos, ocasiona una rebelión sin precedentes. Sin embargo, en la misma proporción, Ulises voltea su futuro. Por desgracia, de manera dramática. Si bien, por otra parte, se trata de un propósito ineludible si ambiciona contemplar un nuevo amanecer. Una vez huido y ya en la ciudad, deambula sin saber dónde refugiarse para sentirse a salvo. En el desesperado intento por la supervivencia que Ulises mantiene contra los horribles bípedos que le acosan, resuelve ocultarse en los rincones más tenebrosos de la metrópoli y, posteriormente, no sintiéndose seguro, en los intestinos de ésta: en los subterráneos de la urbe. En tal situación de desamparo y desesperanza, Ulises va recordando, siempre que le es posible, su existencia anterior, sus vivencias como líder de la horda que gobernaba, quién era antes de ser capturado, de qué forma vivía, qué sentía y cómo ha llegado a esa patética situación.

Lo que nadie es capaz de calcular todavía, son las sorprendentes facultades mentales que Ulises ha adquirido al haber sido cautivo de dichos experimentos.

La historia, entre los distintos y poliédricos elementos que la componen, irá complicándose sensiblemente a medida que el lector vaya adentrándose en la narración; pues, cada uno de los actores arrastra, a su vez, de manera paralela sus propias e inquietantes vivencias. Todas ellas, como en un espejo del que resulta imposible huir, quedarán finalmente al descubierto.

En otro ángulo del relato, se acierta Carlos Santisteban, el fiel amigo de Lázaro Clermont, que ejercerá en los últimos capítulos de particular cronista de UN LUGAR DONDE NUNCA MUEREN LOS SUEÑOS, ante su sempiterno amigo, Lázaro Clermont, que, amnésico tras un atentado sufrido, ha extraviado buena parte tanto del recuerdo como de las emociones que poseía en la épica y confusa odisea que los miembros de la historia mantendrán entre sí.
