Este libro propone analizar el espacio en base a las tensiones, memorias e imaginarios que sacan a la luz su carácter histórico, inestable y contradictorio. Basado en la experiencia de un grupo toba del Gran Chaco argentino y recogiendo quince años de trabajo de campo entre ellos, la narrativa se centra en las tensas conexiones que han entrelazado a los lugares que han sido centrales en la práctica toba: el monte que rodea a sus comunidades, el ingenio San Martín del Tabacal, la misión anglicana, el río Pilcomayo y los pastizales del pasado. Los imaginarios tobas sobre diablos son significativos para comprender estos contrapuntos espaciales pues éstos son espíritus malignos que adquieren rasgos particulares en distintos lugares y expresan una sensibilidad histórico-cultural producida por una experiencia colectiva de opresión. Esta experiencia ha estado desgarrada entre la explotación laboral en el ingenio Tabacal y prácticas de autonomía en el monte chaqueño, que han creado un contradictorio entramado de momentos de terror y extrañamiento, abundancia y pobreza, enfermedad y curación. El libro muestra que estos "lugares de diablos" han sido constituidos por memorias de dominación y violencia así como por intentos de crear espacios propios desde los cuales conjurarlas.

Gastón Gordillo es Profesor de Antropología en la Universidad de British Columbia, Canadá. Ha realizado investigaciones sobre espacio, historia, memoria, experiencias de dominación y movilizaciones políticas entre gente toba, criolla y guaraní en el Gran Chaco y noroeste argentino. Ganador de una beca Guggenheim, es autor de En el Gran Chaco: antropologías e historias (Prometeo, 2006), Nosotros vamos a estar acá para siempre: historias tobas (Biblos, 2005), El río y la frontera (Biblos, 2002, con Juan Martín Leguizamón) y compilador con Silvia Hirsch de Movilizaciones indígenas e identidades en disputa en la Argentina (2010, Flacso-La Crujía).
