Eine eigene Abhandlung des Lymphgefasssystems im Handbuch der all- gemeinen Pathologie erschien uns unerlasslich. Das 'Vissen von diesem System ist in den letzten Jahrzehnten bedeutend vermehrt worden. Auch hat. die Lympho- logie als diagnostische Methode in den Kliniken einen breiten Raum gewonnen. In der jetzigen Phase der Forschung und praktischen Anwendung war eine Zwischenbilanz aus der Sicht der allgemeinen Pathologie wunschenswert, weil die Ergebnisse der einzelnen Forschungsrichtungen mit ihren verschiedenen Methoden in zahlreichen, oft schwer erreichbaren Zeitschriften niedergelegt sind. Entschei- dend fur unser Bemuhen war aber, dass das Lymphgefasssystem mit seiner Trans- portfunktion einer Behandlung im Sinne der allgemeinen Pathologie zuganglich ist und eine entsprechende Betrachtung bisher weitgehend fehlte. Das Lymphgefasssystem hat eine Hilfsfunktion fur die venose Seite des Blut- kreislaufes. Diese Beziehung ist schon in der ersten Anlage als Venenderivat zu erkennen. Die Verwandtschaft des Lymphgefasssystems mit dem Blutgefasssystem schliesst aber nicht aus, dass das System in der Entwicklung bald eigene Wege geht, die auch bei der vergleichenden Betrachtung zu erkennen sind. Die Erfor- schung der anatomischen Grundlagf'n des Lymphgcfasssystems und seiner Aus- breitung reicht zwar' weit in die Geschichte der Medizin zuruck, aber gerade im letzten Jahrzehnt sind zahlreiche Befunde, die mit Hilfe des Elektronenmikro- skopes erhoben wurden, hinzugekommen. Die von der Anlage her engen Be- ziehungen des Lymphgefasssystems zur Blutbahn bleiben auch spater als lympho- venose Anastomosen erhalten. Der Transport der Lymphe ist ohne eigene Motorik nicht denkbar.
