Manfredo é um nobre faustiano que vive nos Alpes de Berna. Torturado internamente por alguma culpa misteriosa, que tem a ver com a morte de sua amada, Astarte, ele usa seu domínio da linguagem e feitiço para convocar sete espíritos, dos quais busca o esquecimento. Os espíritos, que governam os vários componentes do mundo corporal, são incapazes de controlar os eventos passados e, portanto, não podem atender ao apelo de Manfredo. Por algum tempo, o destino o impede de escapar de sua culpa por meio do suicídio.

O GIAOUR
Byron foi inspirado a escrever o poema durante sua Grand Tour durante 1810 e 1811, que empreendeu com seu amigo John Cam Hobhouse. Enquanto estava em Atenas, ele tomou conhecimento do costume turco de jogar no mar uma mulher considerada culpada de adultério embrulhada em um saco.
"Giaour" (é uma palavra turca ofensiva para infiel ou não crente e é semelhante, mas não relacionada à palavra árabe "kafir". A história tem o subtítulo "Um fragmento de um conto turco" e é o único poema narrativo fragmentário de Byron. Byron desenhou a história com três narradores dando seu ponto de vista individual sobre a série de eventos. A história principal é de Leila, um membro do harém de seu mestre Hassan, que ama o giaour e é morta por afogamento no mar por Hassan. Como vingança, o giaour mata Hassan e depois entra em um mosteiro devido ao seu remorso.
O design da história permite o contraste entre as percepções cristã e muçulmana de amor, morte e vida após a morte.
O poema foi escrito depois que Byron se tornou famoso da noite para o dia, após a publicação dos dois primeiros cantos da Peregrinação de Childe Harold, e reflete seu desencanto com a fama. Também reflete a tristeza, o remorso e a luxúria de dois casos de amor ilícitos, um com sua meia-irmã Augusta Leigh e o outro com Lady Frances Webster.
A primeira versão do poema foi escrita entre setembro de 1812 e março de 1813, e uma versão de 700 linhas publicada em junho de 1813. Várias outras edições foram publicadas antes do final de 1813, cada uma mais longa que a anterior. A última edição contém 1.300 linhas, quase o dobro da versão publicada pela primeira vez.
