Wenn man die Menschen nach den Techniken und Wirkungsweisen der Werbung befragt, ist natürlich allen der Beigeschmack der Manipulation bewusst - jeder ist der Meinung, dass er diese Art der Einflussnahme schon lange durchschaut hat. Auch die Medien sagen über uns, wir wären aufgeklärte, informierte und kritische Zeitgenossen. Und weil uns diese Behauptung so schmeichelt, stimmen wir ihr gerne ohne darüber nachzudenken zu. Würden die Konsumenten ihr Kaufverhalten allerdings wirklich nur anhand objektiver Kriterien treffen, so würden sich die immensen Ausgaben für Werbung kaum lohnen. Dennoch werden in Deutschland jedes Jahr etwa 80 Milliarden Euro in Werbemaßnahmen investiert - Unternehmen lassen sich eine einmalige Schaltung eines Werbespots zur besten Sendezeit sogar bis zu 100.000 Euro kosten! Die entstandene Marktsättigung - dank Massenproduktion und der daraus folgenden Erschwinglichkeit der Ware - führt dazu, dass sich die beworbenen Produkte immer ähnlicher werden und in Bezug auf ihre objektiven Kriterien kaum noch zu unterscheiden sind. Daher stehen Werbefachleute und Marketingexperten vor der Herausforderung, in das Unterbewusstsein der Kunden vorzudringen, um deren geheimste Wünsche, Bedürfnisse, Instinkte und Sehnsüchte anzusprechen - denn Werbung, die nur mit überzeugenden Fakten arbeitet, wird in unserer reizüberfluteten Gesellschaft kaum noch wahrgenommen. Dabei wenden sie immer raffiniertere und durchtriebenere Methoden an, um die Konsumgewohnheiten der Menschen auszuspionieren und diese dann zum Kauf neuer Produkte zu verführen.
