Diese Monographie hat das Ziel, das Leben einer Prinzessin des 15. Jahrhunderts - Mara Brankovic - darzustellen. Zu diesem Zwecke wurde nicht ausschliesslich auf die Methode der Prosopographie zuruckgegriffen, sondern es wurde der Versuch unternommen, erstere mit der Methode der Geschlechterforschung (gender studies) zu verbinden.Die Aufarbeitung der Quellen zu Mara Brankovic erfolgte im Hinblick darauf, nach dem "Wie" ihrer Darstellung zu fragen. Hierbei konnten ihr Selbstverstandnis und die Rezeption ihrer Personlichkeit und das ihr seitens ihrer Zeitgenossen zugedachte Rollenbild ergrundet werden.Die Besonderheit dieser Arbeit liegt in der Zusammenfuhrung, Ubersetzung und Interpretation einer Vielzahl sprachlich unterschiedlichster Quellen.Mara Brankovic stammte von vier sudosteuropaischen Herrschergeschlechtern ab - den Brankovici, den Nemanjiden, den Kantakuzenoi und den Palaiologoi. Nach dem Jahre 1428, als sie mit dem osmanischen Sultan Murad II. verlobt wurde, ist eine Veranderung der Rezeption ihrer Person in den Quellen zu erkennen, weil sie aus der Anonymitat hervortritt, allerdings nicht als Subjekt, sondern als Objekt, uber dessen Schicksal nach politischen Gesichtspunkten seitens ihres Vaters Djuradj Brankovic und ihres zukunftigen Ehemannes Murad II. entschieden wird. Als diplomatisches Pfand wechselte sie 1436 aus der Obhut ihres Vaters in diejenige ihres Ehemannes, ohne dieses festgesteckte Bezugsfeld beeinflussen oder verlassen zu konnen. Wahrend ihres ersten Aufenthaltes im Osmanischen Reich zwischen 1436 und Murads Tod 1451 lernte sie ihren Stiefsohn Mehmed II. kennen, womit die Vorbedingung fur ihre spatere Rolle in Sudosteuropa geschaffen war.Den wichtigsten Einschnitt erlebte die Personlichkeit von Mara Brankovic durch die Flucht in das Osmanische Reich zu ihrem Stiefsohn im Jahre 1457. Als ehemalige Frau eines Sultans fand sie Aufnahme am osmanischen Hofe, womit aus der Sicht der Geschlechterforschung der interessanteste Abschnitt ihres Lebens begann. Durch ihr gutes Verhaltnis zu Mehmed II. wurde der serbischen Prinzessin dessen Gnade zuteil, sodass sie ausreichend Landbesitz zu ihrem Unterhalt erhielt, was ihr die Umsetzung eigener Initiativen erleichterte. Zwischen 1457 und 1487 zeichnen die Quellen ein Bild der Interaktion zwischen Mara Brankovic, ihrem Stiefsohn, Sultan Mehmed und dessen Untertanen.Mara fungierte darin als verbindendes Element zwischen der "Welt der Vergangenheit" und der "Welt der Gegenwart". Sie stand in der Nachfolge ihres Vaters und seiner Vorganger - der serbischen Konige, Kaiser, Feudalherren und Despoten - und war somit Stifterin der Athoskloster und Ansprechperson des orthodoxen Monchtums. In der "Welt der Gegenwart" versuchte Mara Brankovic, auf der Basis ihres Einflusses als Witwe eines Sultans die Existenz des orthodoxen Monchtums im Osmanischen Reich durch Schenkungen zu sichern. Sie begegnet in den Quellen als Fursprecherin osmanischer Untertanen und als Vermittlerin zwischen der Hohen Pforte und Ragusa bzw. Venedig.
