About the Book

English summary: Personal experiences have been directly incorporated into Marc Chagall's art. In paintings, drawings and prints, his inspiring relationship with his wife, Bella, plays a central role. This catalog for the exhibition "Marc Chagall: Lebenslinien" examines the special relationship between the painter and his wife against the background of his work. Chagall's illustrations are the starting point for his memoir My Life and to the books written by Bella, First Encounter and Burning Lights. These captured memories of childhood and youth in the shetl of Vitebsk provide a treasure trove of images that appear in many variations in his paintings and remain of importance for his later work. Special focus is placed on Chagall's discussion of the role of the artist and on his artistic self. This was a subject that occupied him for his whole life and that has previously been largely ignored. Likewise, little has been mentioned of his confrontation with the Holocaust, a very personal issue for Chagall, who came from a Jewish family. This catalog presents some 150 images of a selection of works by Marc Chagall from the Israel Museum in Jerusalem, shown for the first time in Germany. It is supplemented by loans from German and international collections such as the Basel Art Museum, the Centre Georges Pompidou, Paris, the State Tretyakov Gallery, Moscow, the State Gallery in Stuttgart, and significant private collections. German text.
