El fútbol, expresión urbana que se desarrollará libremente en el potrero, es una pasión que producirá, durante parte del siglo xx, grandes jugadores de los estratos populares. El ideal será el pibe que romperá con el estilo de juego estructurado de los pioneros británicos. En el estilo argentino (la nuestra), y por ende la masculinidad expresada en el fútbol, el pibe del potrero gambetea al defensor con suhabilidad individual. Maradona (el Pibe de Oro), en quien se aúnan imaginario e historia, es la encarnación casi mística de aquel ideal. En contraste con el fútbol, el polo es un deporte netamente rural asociado a los estancieros y a los espacios casi infinitos de la pampa. El estilo de juego argentino en el polo es más duro, más físico pero también más rápido y pícaro que el británico que le dio origen, contra el que se compara, se diferencia y consagra en los Juegos Olímpicos de 1924. En esto inciden el juego en la llanura, el estilo de montar del gaucho, y los petisos, cruzas de caballos criollos con pur sang ingleses, entrenados en las vastas planicies por los sorprendentes petiseros. En el caso del tango, el libro ahonda en su marginalidad urbana de comienzos del siglo XX y decodifica tanto el sentido de las letras como la performance del baile que es admirado en París y Nueva York. Frente a análisis más rígidos sobre el hombre argentino, Archetti nos hace ver que la masculinidad del tango estará siempre puesta en riesgo por la femme fatale y que el macho argentino en última instancia llorará su traición. Masculinidades muestra las ideas de masculinidad que se expresan en las prácticas corporales que dicen algo sobre la sociedad argentina, a la vez que destaca la relevancia del potrero, de las enormes extensiones de la pampa y del burdel como espacios de expresión de la creatividad masculina argentina. Espacios que no serán, como en el hemisferio norte, la escuela, el trabajo y el hogar, sino territorios libres de disciplinamiento que permitirán que florezca una identidad masculina creativa, imprevisible y fuertemente individualista que perdura en el presente.
About the Author: Eduardo P. Archetti (Santiago del Estero, 12 de abril de 1943- Oslo, 6 de junio de 2005). Antropólogo y sociólogo argentino, es considerado uno de los científicos sociales más originales de América Latina. Descubridor de zonas nuevas para el trabajo académico, fue pionero del abordaje antropológico del mundo de los deportes (el fútbol, el polo, el box, el automovilismo) y el tango en la Argentina, su relación con los imaginarios colectivos y la invención de una nación. Junto a numerosos artículos publicados en medios especializados de Europa y América se encuentran sus libros El potrero, la pista y el ring: Las patrias del deporte argentino (Buenos Aires: Fondo de Cultura Económica, 2001) y la que para muchos es su obra fundamental: Masculinidades. Fútbol, tango y polo en la Argentina, ahora publicada por Club House Publishers, 2016.
