About the Book

English summary: This text was published in 1921/22 along with other posthumously published texts in Economy and Society under the heading 'The Sociology of Religion (Types of Religious Communities)'. The text was written in 1913/1914 and reflects a discovery Weber made in 1911, that not merely the Capitalist ethos but also other social orders of modern Western culture are dependent on the preceding religious history. Analyzing the development of religious communities in human history, Weber focussed on the diversity of practical attitudes to the world in East and West. Rejecting a materialism which traces human behavior in all times and cultures back to similar interests, Weber pointed out the impact, that subjective meanings and world views had on practical actions.
