Que peut-il exister de commun entre le fils unique de l'empereur François-Joseph héritier du trône d'Autriche-Hongrie et elle-même qui, tout en appartenant à la haute société de Vienne, ne possède cependant pas assez de quartiers de noblesse pour être reçue au palais de la Hofburg? En dépit de ces réflexions raisonnables, Marie s'éprend du prince impérial. Elle a seize ans, l'âge de ces enfantillages, et sa passion soigneusement tenue secrète resterait peut-être un simple amour de tête si la comtesse Larisch, amie de sa mère et cousine de Rodolphe, n'entrait en scène et faisait disparaître tous les obstacles. La rêve commencé le 12 avril 1888 prend corps, mais c'est pour s'achever en tragédie le 29 janvier 1889 par les coups de feu tirés au pavillon de chasse de Mayerling. S'appuyant sur les archives officielles, Claude Anet a reconstitué la brève idylle de Marie Vetsera avec un talent qui donne l'éclat du roman à ce qui est une page de l'histoire de la Maison d'Autriche
About the Author: Claude Anet, né Jean Schopfer (Morges (Suisse), 28 mai 1868 - Paris, 9 janvier 1931), est un écrivain français, journaliste et joueur de tennis, vainqueur en 1892 du championnat de France international de tennis (Roland-Garros). Romancier, il est l'auteur de Ariane, jeune fille russe et de Mayerling, tous deux plusieurs fois adaptés au cinéma. Biographie: Jean Schopfer naît à Morges, en 1868, d'une famille française, protestante, exilée en Suisse depuis deux siècles. Il est licencié ès lettres et diplômé de l'École du Louvre. Passionné de sport, il est, en 1892, champion de France de tennis, premier joueur à avoir remporté le championnat de France international de tennis, qui deviendra plus tard le tournoi de Roland-Garros. Il est à nouveau finaliste en 1893. Il a consacré un ouvrage à la vedette de ce sport, Suzanne Lenglen (Éd. Simon Kra, 1927). Grand voyageur, Schopfer parlait plusieurs langues, le russe, l'anglais, un allemand composite, un peu de persan. Au début du XXe siècle, il adopte le nom de plume Claude Anet, nom du rival du jeune Jean-Jacques Rousseau dans le coeur de Mme de Warens. Il écrit des livres de voyage, des romans, du théâtre. Il est aussi reporter pour le Temps et Le Petit Parisien. En 1917, il assiste à la Révolution russe en tant que correspondant à Saint-Pétersbourg du Journal. Il est l'auteur de plusieurs romans, dont, en 1920, Ariane, jeune fille russe, adapté à plusieurs reprises au cinéma, notamment par Billy Wilder (Ariane, 1957). Un an avant sa mort, en 1930, il publie Mayerling, qui fera lui aussi l'objet d'adaptations filmées (1936 et 1968). Après le tennis, il pratiqua le golf, et prédisait le croquet pour ses vieux jours. Mais il meurt d'une septicémie généralisée le 9 janvier 1931 à Paris, à 62 ans.
