Oswald Spenglers Der Mensch und die Technik enthält eine Reihe von Prognosen, die sich heute, gut achtzig Jahre nachdem das Buch geschrieben wurde, als bemerkenswert treffsicher erweisen. Spengler sah voraus, dass die Industrialisierung zu massiven Umweltproblemen führen muss und dass unzählige Tierarten ausgerottet würden. Er prophezeite ferner, dass Arbeitskraft aus der Dritten Welt zunehmend mit der Arbeiterschaft in den industrialisierten Ländern konkurrieren würde, weil dieselbe Arbeit für geringeren Lohn ausgeführt wird. Daher würde der Schwerpunkt industrieller Produktion allmählich immer mehr nach Ostasien, Indien und Südamerika verlegt werden.

Die Technik hat, nach Spengler, dem Menschen nicht nur die Möglichkeit gegeben, die Kräfte der Natur zu zügeln, sondern sie hat den Menschen der Natur entfremdet. Moderne Maschinentechnik dominiert unsere Kultur immer stärker - auf Kosten des Natürlichen und Organischen. Der Mensch, der sich mit Hilfe der Technik zum Herren über die Natur gemacht hat, ist im Begriff seinerseits von der Technik versklavt zu werden. "Der gestürzte Sieger wird von dem rasenden Gespann zu Tode geschleift", schreibt Spengler.

Er prognostizierte auch, dass die Menschen im Westen früher oder später ihres immer mehr gekünstelten Lebensstils müde werden würden. Allmählich würden sie sich gegen die Zivilisation wenden, die sie geschaffen haben, und sie verabscheuen. Einen Weg aus diesem Dilemma gebe es allerdings nicht, da die technische Entwicklung sich nicht aufhalten ließe. Die hochtechnologische abendländische Kultur sei daher dazu verurteilt, von innen verzehrt zu werden und unterzugehen. Es werde eine Zeit kommen, da unsere Riesenstädte mit ihren Wolkenkratzern ebenso zertrümmert und vergessen sein werden "wie die Paläste des alten Memphis und Babylon". Bleibt abzuwarten, ob diese Prophezeiung, seine schicksalsträchtigste, eintreffen wird.
