Emil Gugenzeil reiste ständig zwischen seinem Berliner Büro und seinen Fabriken in Schlesien hin und her. Die wenigen Abende, die er in Berlin verbrachte, waren mit gesellschaftlichen Pflichten ausgefüllt. Wenn er aus dem Büro kam, lag der Frack bereit, und seine junge Frau wartete meist schon ungeduldig in der Halle. Das Gespräch war immer das gleiche: Guten Abend, Liebes! Tag, Emil! Bitte, beeil dich! Er stürzte die Treppe hinauf, wandte sich oben um und rief hinunter: Du siehst heute abend wieder prachtvoll aus. Sie lächelte und rief zurück: Ich freue mich, daß ich dir gefalle. Dann verschwand er, der Diener half ihm in den Frack - während Kaete unten vor dem Spiegel stand und das Kunstwerk - denn das war sie - noch einmal einer Prüfung unterzog. - Meist rief sie dann die Zofe, die irgend etwas an der Toilette in Ordnung bringen mußte. Inzwischen war ihr Mann auch schon angezogen - die Zofe half Frau Kaete in den Abendpelz, der Fabrikant stülpte den stumpfen Zylinder auf den Kopf, und sie bestiegen ihr Auto. Regelmäßig, wenn der Wagen aus dem Gittertor heraus und auf offener Straße war, fragte Frau Kaete: Wie gehen die Geschäfte? Und er erwiderte dann jedesmal: Danke! sie gehen. Wir brauchen uns keine Sorgen zu machen. Ich kann mir also den Pelz - manchmal war es auch ein neuer Wagen oder ein neues Pferd - kaufen? Gewiß! erwiderte er - aber übertreibe es nicht. Das sagst du jedesmal.
