About the Book

Applying a systems engineering approach to the problem of recognition, including their own original studies, the authors summarise the latest research in the field of recognition problems. This book considers a wide range of questions that relate to the development of recognition systems - construction of the feature space, recognition algorithms (determinate, probabilistic, logical, calculation of estimation), procedures of learning, self-learning, mathematical modelling of recognition systems, evaluation of their effectiveness and optimal control of recognition processes. Accepted by the USSR Ministry of Middle and Higher Specialised Education as an educational aid for university students of computing and automatic control systems, this is the most comprehensive edition of the book. The distinctive characteristic of this book, which distinguishes it from literature on pattern recognition, is its systems engineering approach to the problem of recognition - this makes it possible to use the material it contains when developing practically any recognition system whether in engineering, medicine, geology, criminology or other areas.

Table of Contents:
Part 1 An introduction to the problem of recognition of objects and phenomena: qualitative description of recognition problems; the basic problems of constructing a recognition system; classification of recognition systems. Part 2 Methods of processing a priori information: recognition systems without learning; learning recognition systems; self learning methods. Part 3 Probabilistic methods of recognition: synopsis of statistical decision theory; the Bayes criterion; the minimax criterion; the Neyman-Pearson criterion; an example from the field of technical diagnostics; sequential decision procedure; learning via the Bayes criterion; self-learning with a known number of classes. Part 4 Methods of determining the vocabulary of features used in the construction of the recognition system: determination of a vocabulary of features subject to restrictions on the cost of the creation of the technical means of observation; taking account of the probability of the determination of the features; games theoretic approach to the construction of the feature space of the recognition system; selection of the feature space under conditions of probabilistic description of the classes; method based on a comparison of a posterior prbabilities; a method based on a comparison of the probabilistic characteristics of the features; method based on defining the quantity of information; selection of the feature space in the absence of an priori vocabulary. Part 5 Computational methods of boolean algebra: basic concepts of boolean algebra; representing numbers and basis; recovery of the boolean function from the representing number; dependence and independence of statements; boolean equations; change of variables; methods of solving logical recognition problems. Part 6 Methods of constructing logical recognition systems: solution of recognition problems with a large number of elements; computer application for constructing a reduced basis; what will the weather be like tomorrow? the problem of accumulating a priori data; camouflage problem; recognition under conditions of counteraction; recognition algorithms based on computation of estimates. Part 7 Control of recognition processes: statement of the optimization problem for recognition processes; the general notion of an algorithm for controlling a recognition process; construction of an algorithm for controlling the recognition process; example of optimal scheduling of the recognition process; special approaches to decision making in the recognition problems. Part 8 Efficiency of recognition systems; an estimate of the efficiency of probabilistic recognition systems; efficiency of logical recognition systems; application of the Monte Carlo method for estimating the efficiency of logical recognition systems.
