About the Book

Pairs of laboratory participants (dyads) were randomly assigned to the role of teammate or competitor. They then participated in a game that resulted in a winner and a loser followed by a two-choice coordination task. For the dyads in the competitor role the winner received a higher payment, while the dyads in the teammate role divided the payment equally. Role framing was successful---participants thought of their counterparts more as teammates in the Teammate than in the Competitor role. Moreover, in most of the studies reported here, Competitor winners perceived themselves as in a better position than Competitor losers for the coordination task. The competitor role induced a perceived status difference. In Study 1, with no dominant strategy or communication for the coordination task, coordination and non-coordination occurred in different ways for Competitors and for Teammates. In Study 2, where there was a dominant strategy, but no communication, Teammates always followed it, coordinating profitably, while Competitors often continued to focus on status, thereby losing. Allowing individuals to communicate (Study 3) increased coordination and total benefit for both teammates and competitors even in the absence of a dominant strategy. Individuals at a higher status however, were able to obtain greater benefits at the cost of those in a lower status. Changing the initial task to a luck-based task (Study 4) did not attenuate or eliminate the impact of the Competitor role. Since prior task performance is irrelevant for coordination, role produces a minimal status difference: difference in position with no difference in control over outcomes. This is sufficient to have considerable impact on both the outcomes coordinated upon and the acceptance of sub-optimal outcomes by lower status individuals. This Minimal Status Effect has considerable ramifications for individual decisions as well as organizational decisions and social policies that may tap into social status structure.
