About the Book

English summary: The beginnings of Christian missionary activity in Oceana were shaped by the challenges that had to be met by both sides, that is, both the inhabitants of the Pacific islands and the missionaries. The missionaries had to cope with precarious climactic conditions, poor health, and above all, with linguistic and cultural barriers. In the early phases of regionally diverse missionary activities, running from the 17th century to the 20th century, many missionaries quickly reached the limits of their effectiveness, which they could only overcome by means of their strong beliefs. Many of these pioneers of pastoral work functioned at the same time as ethnologists, in which they recorded the language of the locals and to document extensively their culture. Conflict with the inhabitants of the islands, however, also led some missionaries to a violent death. In various ways, all missionaries were pioneers, discoverers, medics, teachers, researchers, and often martyrs. Hermann Muckler brings together in this biographical lexicon over 1700 short biographies of Catholic and Protestant missionaries who were active in the South Pacific and whose work was decisive for the development and expansion of Christian missions. For the first time in this extensive work, the partially unknown biographical information about missionary activities in Oceana is presented in detail. The accomplishments, success, and failures are rendered by theme in short presentations such as the durability and importance of pastoral, linguistic, and ethnographical work to current research.
