Aged Manx people, when they wish for particular weather at the approach of the different seasons of the year, say--"Arragh chayeeagh."--" A misty spring." "Sourey ouyragh."--" Gloomy summer." "Fmyr ghrianagh."--" Sunny autumn." "As geurey rioeeagh."--" A frosty winter." Manx Motto. Several remarks on the arms and motto of the Isle of Man appeared in the first series of Mona Miseellany. The following is the Manx of the motto: --BALLADS AND SONGS. "I love a ballad in print." Shakspeare. LITTLE MANNANAN, SON OF LEIRR, OR AN ACCOUNT OF THE ISLE OF MAN; TRADITIONARY BALLAD. Tills is from a copy printed in Train's History of the Isle of Man (vol. i. pp. 50-55, Douglas, 1845), with these remarks: --"The following curious ballad, which is now for the first time translated into English, was composed in the Manks language. The date of printing has been obliterated from the copy in my possession, which I believe to be extremely scarce; but the writer, as appears from the last three verses, lived during the time of Thomas, second Earl of Derby, whose landing in the island in 1507 he describes. This Earl succeeded his grandfather in A.D. 1504, and died in 1521, between which dates the ballad has evidently been written." "The translation of the lines as they stand in the Manks song is without any regard to the poetry in English."
