About the Book

Excerpt from Montaigne's Essays in Three Books, Vol. 1: With Notes and Quotations

Having thus impartially related what is urg'd againll: Montaigne, we proceed now to mention what is faid in his Vindication. And we might here, in the firll Place, make ufe of the long Preface Madamoifelle de Goumay has prefix'd to the French Folio Edition of his Bilayo, 165 2, wherein {he does not only give a full Anfwer to all the Obje'tinos made, or that can bemade againll Montaigne, but alfo talks of him as of a Man whole Works have te viv'd Truth in his Age, and which therefore the calls the quinn/etta of Philofiphy, the Hellehore qf Man's Falb, the Setter at Liberty if the Under/landing, and the judicial tone of Rea/bn. But We do not think fit to infill upon her Evidence, for notwithftanding the folid Arguments her Opinion is grounded upon, lhe ma be fufpeted to be blindfolded with the pallionate Love e had for her ex cellent Father: And befides, we have in many great Men to produce in Favour of Montaigne, that we may without any Prejudice to his Caufe, wave the Evidence of Mada rnoifelle de Gout-nay. Thefe will tell you, that if he has handled any Matters with an uncommon Freedom, this is an Effet of his generous Temper, which was free from any bafe Compliance and as to his Love for Virtue, and his Reli ion, they appeal to his very Book itfelf, where. By that ruth will appear, if the Pallages alledg'd to prove the contrary are examin'd without Partiality, and not by themfelves, but according to the Connexion they have with what precedes or follows.

Stephen Pa/huier, that fincere Writer, deals more fairly with Montaigne than Silhon, Balzac, or any other of his Oppofers, for he does not conceal his Faults, nor pafs by what may be faid to extenuate or excufe them. Mon tatgne, fays he, in one of his Letters, has feveral ters, whereof the Body is no ways anfwerable Head, witnefs thefe following, The Htfioty of Sparing; a; the Refimblance of Children to their Parents; of the er/is of Virgil; of Coaches; of lame People of Vaniq, and s/iognong'. Thefe are incoherent Things, wherein f the Author runs from one Subject to another, without any Order or Connexion. But after all, we mull take of Montaigne what is good, and not look upon his Titles.
