About the Book

Eurock - Music & Second Culture Post Millennium Archie Patterson's wonderful fanzine, EUROCK, is unique in the world of rock fanzines, not only for its breadth and depth, but also for its incredible 20-year run. Music and words are different mediums, and it isn't easy to describe one with the other. What does come through in the reviews, loud and clear, is his unflagging enthusiasm for the music, through thick and thin. This is what truly sets EUROCK apart from almost every other act of rock journalism; Archie never lost his idealism. I was struck by his editorial in the 27th issue, when most journalists would have long-since become jaded or burned-out. To my mind, it serves as a perfect summary of the magic that was EUROCK: "Music can be a voice that speaks to and means something to people maybe it's the most powerful form of communication we can share. In addition, if made/played for the right reasons, it brings out the best in people. EUROCK's function on all levels is to turn people on to new music that in some way works in this positive way." The first book, European Rock & the Second Culture was a massive 700+-page reference source of real time journalism, full of in the moment opinions and reactions to the music and culture in flux during a time of change. The new one, Music & Second Culture Post Millennium, is 235 pages, offering reflections on the past, looking back at the history of artists who Eurock has covered from the beginning. It also features interviews and thought pieces that offer perspective on where the music has been, gone to, as well as a very personal remembrance of who, what, where & how I've spent my life. It covers a vast and diverse array of International artists, some more famous in the experimental music scene, others not so, many translated into English for the first time. It also is Augmented by Audio Content online at: www.eurock.com Some of the Interviews & Features included are: Giorgio Gomelsky Gilbert Artman & Urban Sax Richard Pinhas of Heldon Christian Vander of Magma Florian Fricke of Popol Vuh Godfather of Deutsch Rock Gerhard Augustin A Tour Journal of Ashra in Japan by Harald Grosskopf Original documents of the Cosmic Couriers Rolf-Ulrich Kaiser & Gille Lettmann [Kluster] Flashback, A history of Conrad Schnitzler The "Banned" Czech band Plastic People of the Universe Mikhail Chekalin Russia's Post Symphonic Composer Savage Rose's Freedom & Love The Experimental Music Scene in Mexico Complete EUROCK & MIR Records Discographies music & Much More
About the Author: Archie Patterson began Eurock in 1971 as an FM radio program on KFIG FM in Central California. In 1973, he expanded his work to include a magazine of the same name. He played music from the alternative culture centered on the independent music scene that began developing all around the world during the late 1960's. In the mid 1970's, he moved up to Portland, Oregon to help found ITC, the first national import retail music company in the US. Eurock Magazine had become the definitive English language source internationally for music, information and news of the rapidly expanding Indie scene from places as far ranging as Russia, Japan, Continental Europe & Latin America. In the early 1980's, he moved to Los Angeles and a new start-up import company Greenworld/ Paradox, who invited him to join them in creating a full scale wholesale & retail import music distribution company. While there, he expanded the distribution of music from countries spanning the globe as well as did special programming on KPFK Pacifica radio outlet, featuring music and interviews with artists that passed through town. The distribution of Eurock Magazine branched out into the mainstream newsstands of LA, even reaching into the realm of TV program placement and movie producers' offices. While living there he began an Indie Eurock label as well producing music by artists who explored music outside of the mainstream. In the mid 1980's Eurock became a leading US source for International information, Music Distribution and DIY label releases of Indie Music. In 2000, eurock.com morphed into a Multi-Media Webzine. Patterson has since published a multi-media CD-Rom, The Golden Age, a 700+ page reference guide called Eurock - European Music & the Second Culture, produced 25 iTunes podcasts & in the past two years published, The Second Culture as Kindle & Epub format. In 2011, Patterson began hosting a weekly program Friday nights 10PM to 11PM on San Francisco Community Radio. He features an eclectic array of diverse musical programming that covers the past 50 years of alternative music history. In July 2013, Jennie Thomas, Head Archivist for the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Museum, contacted Archie Patterson. She asked him if he would like to include his work, created over the past 40 years of doing Eurock, to their Archives. He was amazed, as well as honored to be invited. So far, he has sent them 20 lbs of Eurock magazines, ED Catalogs, the 1st book, CD-ROM and other related materials.
