Die österreichische Gesellschaft, insbesondere eine kleine Stadt wie Salzburg, ist schon lange nicht mehr monokulturell oder monoreligiös. Mit der steigenden Migration siedelten sich zunehmend Familien islamischer Herkunft an. Durch sie kommen fremde Lebensgewohnheiten zum Vorschein. Dies zeigt sich auch zunehmend an den österreichischen Hauptschulen, die von Schülern zahlreicher Nationalitäten mit muslimischem Religionsbekenntnis besucht werden. Viele österreichische Schüler mit christlichem Religionsbekenntnis besuchen mittlerweile die Schule ohne oder mit geringer religiöser Vorbildung. Ein aber noch immer beachtlicher Anteil von muslimischen Mitschülern ist um einiges stärker in seinem Glauben verwurzelt als seine christlichen Mitschüler. Während es, insbesondere unter christlichen Kindern und Jugendlichen, "out" ist, religiös zu sein, den Gottesdienst zu besuchen, zu beten, die Bibel oder religiöse Bücher zu lesen, ist für viele islamische Schüler der bekennende Glaube ein wichtiger Bestandteil in der Familie, wie auch in der Erziehung. Weiters ist der Anteil derer, die an höhere Mächte glauben, an das Überirdische, bei muslimischen Jugendlichen doppelt so hoch wie bei christlichen Jugendlichen. Das andersartige Verhalten von muslimischen Schülern gegenüber Schülern österreichischer Abstammung mit christlichem Religionsbekenntnis kann zu Problemen führen. Hier kann man mit interkulturellem und interreligiösem Lernen ansetzen. Außerdem ist es von großer Bedeutung die etwaigen Sprachprobleme der muslimischen Schüler schnellst möglich zu verringern und mit ihren Eltern in Kontakt zu treten, damit ein gemeinsamer Weg gefunden werden kann, die Kinder bestmöglich in die Klasse zu integrieren. Weiters kann der Kontakt mit den Eltern hilfreich sein, um z.B. ihre soziale Situation, Immigrationshintergründe und Verhaltens- und Denkweisen besser verstehen zu können.
