About the Book

- Virginia WOOLF, born in 1882 and died in 1941 (suicide at 59), is an English writer. She has been a member of the Literary Society and the Bloomsbury Group. The latter was a group of writers, artists and English philosophers. She met Leonard Woolf, her future husband, with whom she created the Hogarth Press, and who will publish all his novels. Their wedding was celebrated in 1912. His father is Sir Leslie Stephen. He was a writer and publisher. Also, during her youth, Virginia had access to the library of her home, where there were classics of English literature. At the age of 22, at the death of her father in 1904, she began her first novel, which she will take ten years to write. His novels and essays are remarkable successes. She published her works on an author's behalf. She is considered a great novelist in the UK and an innovator in the English language. In her works, she uses acutely the motives of her characters in the psychological and emotional fields. She was a writer of genius and a literary critic. She has fascinated her contemporaries by her avant-garde creativity. Her psychological novels and her life as a free, melancholy and tortured woman continue to inspire feminists and women's intellectual emancipation. During her life as an author, she had decided to write ardently, regardless, and independently of criticism and recognition. - NIGHT AND DAY by Virginia Woolf This novel analyzes the complexity of human feelings. Katherine Hilbery, a girl who has everything to be happy, is the subject of solicitation of two young men. The first is William Rodney, to whom she is already engaged, and the second is Ralph Denham, a more modest man. For the latter, there is Mary Datchet militant suffragette, independent, she has eyes only for him. Katherine Hilbery is imprisoned in the shackles of a bourgeois society where arranged marriage is the only way out. She is disturbed and is attached to her loneliness. She wants the independence of Mary Datchet. This one, on the other hand, is strong. She is alive and convinced of the merits of her activity. She is independent and rejects any form of subordination of the woman. Her weakness is this one-sided love she brings to Ralph. This one is attached elsewhere. The relationship between the two women is unstable. It's competition, jealousy, but also mutual understanding. Ralph Denham is the only constant character. He is devoted and at the same time he is tormented by his love for Katherine. He is convinced that his feelings are doomed to fail, especially because of his modest social situation. His thought is directed to exile to the countryside to write a book as deliverance from this hell. This flight would end his shameful social condition and his obsession with Katherine. William Rodney, being a vain and childish character, will eventually detach himself from the harsh Katherine. In the end, her feelings will rest on her cousin Cassandra, who looks like her.
