Il est bien difficile d'évoquer le nom d'Isabelle Eberhardt sans également évoquer d'autres femmes aventurières ayant connu un destin tout autant remarquable: Alexandra David-Néel, Ella Maillart...
Ces femmes issues de familles aisées ont tout quitté pour l'aventure et le grand saut dans l'inconnu à une époque où la pression sociale et l'absence de modèle nous semblent aujourd'hui un obstacle infranchissable. Avant même de découvrir leurs récits, elles nous fascinent déjà et forcent l'admiration.
Mais Isabelle Eberhardt va au-delà de l'aventure, elle tourne le dos à sa propre culture, fuit l'occident et embrasse l'Orient avec passion. Une passion absolue.

Elle est née à Genève d'une mère issue de la noblesse russe et d'origine allemande. A vingt ans elle rejoint l'Algérie et emménage à Bône (aujourd'hui Annâbah). Isabelle fréquente les quartiers arabes et se passionne pour la culture musulmane. Elle vit pendant un temps en nomade entre Batna, bni Mzab et Oued Souf. Convertie à l'islam, elle échappe de peu en 1901 à une tentative d'assassinat de la part d'un fanatique. Cette même année, elle épouse Slimane Ehnni, un musulman de nationalité française, sous-officier de spahi, sans doute impliqué dans des activités d'espionnage.
Isabelle Ebehardt devient journaliste pour le journal El Akhbar dirigé par Victor Barrucand; elle est notamment envoyée à Aïn Sefra comme reporter de guerre pour témoigner de troubles à la frontière marocaine. En novembre 1903, à Beni Ounif, elle fait la connaissance du général Lyautey qui apprécie sa connaissance de l'Afrique et son sens de la liberté; il dira d'Isabelle:
Elle était ce qui m'attire le plus au monde: une réfractaire. Trouver quelqu'un qui est vraiment soi, qui est hors de tout préjugé, de toute inféodation, de tout cliché et qui passe à travers la vie, aussi libérée de tout que l'oiseau dans l'espace, quel régal !

Le 21 octobre 1904, à Aïn Sefra, l'oued se transforme en torrent furieux et la ville basse, où elle résidait seulement depuis la veille, est en partie submergée. Son compagnon est retrouvé vivant, mais Isabelle périt dans la maison effondrée. Elle repose dans le petit cimetière musulman Sidi Boudjemaâ à Aïn Sefra. Ses récits ont été publiés après sa mort et présentent la réalité quotidienne de la société algérienne au temps de la colonisation française. Ses carnets de voyage et ses journaliers rassemblent ses impressions de voyage nomade dans le Sahara.
