Het was een wereldwijde hit voor de groep in 1975/1976, en de heruitgave in 1991 werd ook een groot hitsucces. Het wordt algemeen beschouwd als een van de succesrijkste popnummers aller tijden. Over de precieze betekenis van de tekst is weinig bekend; Mercury hield er niet van om in interviews zijn tekst uit te leggen.
