Bois brigam, pois nervosos demais no início da viagem.De madruga, os peões rodeiam, ajuntam a boiada. Aí almoçam arroz, feijão com carne seca e farinha, mais café, comida feita pelo cozinheiro da comitiva, o qual com os equipamentos de cozinha, com seu ajudante e duas mulas, vai para o próximo pouso, lá esperando o comboio. Isto se dará por 19 dias, numa caminhada de 3 léguas/dia, isto é, 18 km, até Barretos, prazo este nunca respeitado, pois contratempos ocorrem quase a viagem toda.No avanço da boiada, caminhos difíceis, serras íngremes, estradas estreitas, bois caindo em abismos e morrendo.Gado perdido, sumido, morto, tais perdas debitadas na conta do comissário, pois ele ganha por cabeça ilesa, além da munição de boca que é fornecida pelo dono do gado.O herói da história é um peão de boiadeiro chamado Moreno Ponteiro que leva tal apelido por portar o berrante e ocupar a frente, a ponta da boiada.A caminhada do gado é lenta, reses sempre perdendo peso não só pela viagem, como pela má qualidade dos pastos de aluguel encontrados pelo caminho no fim de cada marcha. Também gado desaparece, ás vezes, não mais encontrado, também furtado, aí chamado de arribada. Gado morre também por fraqueza ou picadura de cobra ou ainda ingerindo erva venenosa geralmente no Brasil central conhecida como timbó.Á noite nos pousos, geralmente a peonagem canta ou até joga truco. Cada pião tem para seu uso dois cavalos fornecidos pelo dono da boiada.Na viagem surgem cidades, enquanto a boiada estaciona nas periferias, em pastos alugados e ruins por uma noite, pousos já previamente designados, conhecedor do caminho pelo comissário.Os peões que estão de folga vão para a cidade bagunçando os bordéis, dando tiros, brigando, sendo presos, agredidos pela policia local. No outro dia o comissário tira esses bêbados da cadeia, pagando fiança exorbitante, de novo para Barretos, avançando, bois bravos, chamados brabezas, tentando se esconderem em moitas de capoeira, existentes no percurso.No fim de cada marcha um toque diferente, convencional do berrante, avisa a peonagem da culatra, isto é, da retaguarda e dos lados para estacionar a manada, totalmente, sem afobação. Nesse fim de marcha o comissário reconta, cuidadosamente, a totalidade do gado.Chegando próximo à travessia de um grande rio, no caso o Paranaíba, limite de Goiás com Minas Gerais, a boiada inicia estouro: O estradão boiadeiro apertava mais a cada braça. Uma cotovelada de arranque da capoeira atingiu a estrada. A ponta da manda estacou de súbito. Um estremecido estancou os sons. O frêmito do pavor cavalgou a boiada. Chifres em chifres estalando. Caudas se erguem. Orelhas hirtas. Os sons desesperados do berrante, entrecortados como o choro cobriram o arranque da boiada. Toda a tropa ágil da talha lateral, na ânsia do cavalo de boiada, irrequieto e azuado, cortou preciso o matraqueado do estouro vacilante. O estouro não progrediu, aviso à peonagem da possibilidade de tal vir a acontecer.Daí para frente as marchas se sucederam normalmente, até Barretos onde o gado é entregue ao frigorífico comprador. Tudo anteriormente combinado entre a empresa e o dono da boiada.
