Son pre, Jacob Temminck, est trsorier de Compagnie hollandaise des Indes orientales qui destine son fils devenir un employ de la Compagnie. Coenraad devient, dix-sept ans, commissaire-priseur. Mais sensibilis l'histoire naturelle par son pre dont la collection personnelle est enrichie par Franois Levaillant (1753-1826), il s'oriente vers l'tude des oiseaux. Il entre alors au service de l'ornithologue allemand Meyer Offenbach qui l'initie la taxidermie. Temminck est le premier directeur du musum national d'histoire naturelle de Leyde, poste qu'il occupe de 1820 jusqu' sa mort. Son Manuel d'ornithologie, ou Tableau systmatique des oiseaux qui se trouvent en Europe (1815) devient l'ouvrage de rfrence sur les oiseaux europens pendant de nombreuses annes. Il hrite d'une vaste collection d'oiseaux de son pre. Il est aussi l'auteur d'une Histoire naturelle gnrale des pigeons et des gallinacs (1813-1817), des Observations sur la classification mthodique des oiseaux (1817), d'un Nouveau recueil de planches colories d'oiseaux pour servir de suite... aux planches enlumines de Buffon... (1820-1838), d'une Monographies de mammalogie (1827), d'une Fauna japonica, sive Descriptio animalium, quae, in itinere per Japoniam...
