He read and understood the English text, and fully concurred in the general principle, and in the utility of the plan. I mentioned the great importance of obtaining the sanction of his Holiness to an examination only of it, and that it might be of more value to Ireland than the gift of 100,000; but he said he did not think the Pope would express an opinion on any temporal subject, especially in reference to other countries. I then said, that I presumed his Holiness was a temporal governor in his own States; 126 DIFFICULTY IN SEEING THE POPE. but he said they had no surplus population here, and that the land was divided into small proprietaries. It appeared to me that when the Pope condemned Communism, in his Encyclical Letter, it was a direct interference with temporal matters; but this, of course, I could not allude to. I then asked if he thought I could obtain an audience of his Holiness, to show him the painting? He thought I could, but I must apply to the Maitre de Chambre. I told him that I had already applied, but could not get any attention. He then offered either to send or give me a note to him. He asked me why the Parliament of Great Britain did not adopt the plan? I said that it was probably deemed chimerical; and that both Lord John Russell and Sir Robert Peel were guided by the maxims of political economy, and thought, that two hours' diminution of labour per day would be injurious to the interests of the working classes. I met Mr. Hemans at Monaldini's readingrooms, and he appeared to be still interested in the plan, and said that he hoped I should not be induced to give it up.
