About the Book

Reviews on amazon.com: 'This book is very informative and a must read book' and 'The author asks those questions all should ask when considering religious faith'. What happened to the Gospels of Thomas, Judas, Peter and even the Gospel of Mary? Why were these writings, along with hundreds of other so-called Gospels and codices (usually leather bound books), discarded at the Council of Nicea in AD 325 when the then religious leaders decided which Gospels to accept into what was to become the Christian Bible? Who was the first woman on earth? According to the Bible it was not Eve. She had been preceded by Lilith! Why do we refer to Mary, mother of Jesus, as the Virgin Mary when the Bible tells us that Jesus has many brothers and sisters? Were they all virgin births? Why has the role of women been portrayed as it is in the Bible? What was the real role of Mary Magdalene? Was she a prostitute, a loyal follower of Jesus or even his wife, who bore the child of Jesus Christ? Why is Mary, mother of Jesus, so revered in modern Christianity when she has a mere 'bit-part' in the Bible, being mentioned hardly at all and when she is mentioned Jesus himself dismisses her? None of the 66 texts in the Bible are from original manuscripts, or even first copies. They are copies, of copies, of copies etc. Scriptwriters were paid to copy the Bible and whomever paid the bills had their say as to what went it, or indeed what was left out or changed. There are numerous forgeries in the Bible. One scholar, Hieronimus, changed no less than 3,500 instances. What makes his changes true and the previous wording untrue? What is the true meaning of the stories of the Garden of Eden and where do they come from? What were 'cherubs'? Which of the two versions of Noah's Ark are real? Or even the different versions of the Nativity! The Bible tells us that the Lord tells his followers to kill men and women, children and babies, and various kinds of animals, to rape women and show no compassion for children and babies. It even tells us that the Lord killed 180,000 people in one night. Is this the work of a gentle and forgiving God? But the Gospel of Thomas tells us that Jesus was bad tempered, He crippled the son of a man who complained about Him, and even struck dead another boy for merely bumping into Him. Like father, like son? The Canaanite God Baal is mentioned 130 times in the Bible. The God El is also mentioned in the Bible and discoveries have found evidence that El was revered as the Father of all Gods. He was regarded as benevolent and holding the cosmos in order. The Hebrew Bible tells us in Numbers that 'El, brought them out of Egypt' (speaking about the Canaanites journey back to Israel). But the Modern English version tells us that 'God, brought them out of Egypt'. Which version is correct, or is God really the same as El? Other books of the Bible tell us that there are multiple Gods, a divine council or pantheon of Gods. And what about the wife of God who is mentioned 40 times in the Bible - the Goddess Asherah. My memories of the religious teachings that I had as a child did not mention any wife of God and always referred to God as the only God. But the Bible tells a different story! Why has the Church changed the content and interpretation of the Bible? Why do they still selectively preach the parts that promote their own doctrines and ignore the rest? Is the Christian religion manmade and used and abused for the ends of religious leaders? This work does not, and indeed can not, answer all of these and other questions. What I hope that it will do is to open other people's minds to question what we have historically been told is the word of God. To question what is true and what is not. To question why any 'untruths' are still being preached to us, or ignored. To question if God really exists and if so what did He really want mankind to do in His honour and the rules that we should live by.
